From the collection of the Archive of Audio Visual Records

Comment: Janusz Kusociński, nickname “Kusy” (1907 – 1940), world champion, Olympic master, frequent champion and master of Poland in long-distance race. In 1928 he was awarded a title of master of Poland in 5–thousand–kilometre race. In the Olympic Games taking place in Los Angeles in 1932 he was the first man in the Polish sport who won gold medal for 10-thousand-kilometre race. During his sporting career he set 19 records of Poland, two world records, one record of Europe and also one of the Olympic Games. He enjoyed great popularity. He was awarded the Cross of Valour for taking part in the September Campaign. On 26 March 1940 he was arrested by Gestapo and afterwards, on June 21 1940 he was shot in Palmiry near Warsaw. Since 1945 the international athletic competition for “Memorial of Janusz Kusociński” has been organized. It takes place in Warsaw.
