Imagine you want to get to the square that surrounds the Ratusz (the Cit Hall) in Poznań. The cobbled one with the colourful buildings that you saw on a postcard. "Excuse me, how do I get to the Rynek" - you ask a passer-by. You'll be sure to hear the reply, "which rynek"?
For Poznań, as befits a city of business, has plenty of markets. There are the Jeżycki, Wildecki, Łazarski and Bernardyński Ryneks. Everywhere there is a rynek, or a bazaar as visitors from the other regions of Poland used to call them. But Poznań's rynek without the market stalls but with the Ratusz is the Stary Rynek - remember that name.
But if you ask for directions to the Starówka, or Old Town, people in Poznań will tell you "There isn't one".
The Stary Rynek is just the beginning of our journey round places with Stary, or Old, in their names.
