The slaughterhouse came into operation in 1900. It was a high-tech plant for that time. The latest machinery was housed in a neo-Gothic building. Together with the growth of the city and the increasing demand for meat new buildings were added. This huge complex with its halls and outbuildings began to look like a city within the city. However, over time the machines became obsolete and locals started complaining about the smell.

In the 90s the Pozmeat Company, then owner of the butchery, moved production out of town. Today the owner of the slaughterhouse is the bank that took the building in place of Pozmeat's debts. There were lots of ideas about what to do with the buildings: art culture, a home for the Law Department of Adam Mickiewicz University, a library. But none of them happened.

However, the lack of investors doesn't mean there's nothing going on inside. There are concerts, plays, exhibitions by artists and students of the Academy of Fine Arts during the Malta and Made in Poznan festivals. Plays performed in the courtyard create a strong impression. The long walk through the production halls and internal lanes before you get to the stage makes it even more impressive.

You can visit the part of the slaughterhouse along Ulica Północna every weekend from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. when there is a flea market. You can buy a china coffee set, out of date school books, a cassette of Popcorn Hits or an old sculpture of a deer. Trade carries on to the sounds of Disco Polo music and the smell of grilled sausages.
