The Ogrody tram terminus owes its name to the Ogród Botaniczny (the Botanical Garden) located at Ulica D±browskiego 165. It was established in 1925 and its pride and joy is its Alpinarium, lovingly built over several decades. This huge rockery has an area of 0.6 hectares and is ten metres high. It is covered with plants typical of the Tatras, Alps and Dragons Mountains and it contains 200 murmuring streams. There is a water feature called "Morskie Oko" by garden employees (Morskie Oko means literally Sea Eye, and is the largest lake in the Polish Tatras). Three thousand tonnes of rocks were used to build the Alpinarium, quite a lot of the granite comes from Poznań's streets, which were renovated in the 60s. In the part of the rockery called the Himalayas you can also find the remains of a gutter. The Garden is open from May 1st to October 31st. If you are here in autumn, make sure you see the Katsura-tree. Its leaves emit the scent of caramel while turning yellow. This is where its German name, Kuchenbaum (the cake tree) comes from.
