SPOT is one of the few institutions located in a building over a hundred years old, built of red brick, that doesn't have the word "stary" in its name. It began life at the end of the XIX century as a power station. After that it was a cheese and dairy factory, a tobacco factory, a bronze sculpture foundry, a shelter for the homeless and finally a public baths. After the war, Sanepid, Poland's environmental health organisation, set up a warehouse for sanitary materials there and, after 1990, there was a PVC wholesaler there. Today it is so multifunctional that it's almost impossible to say exactly what it is. Is it a restaurant, gadget shop, art gallery, dance club? There is a bit of all that, but there is something more. Children take part in art classes and find out if pink is only for girls and blue only for boys. Adults learn how to cook Spanish meals, roll sushi, buy wine or are pampered in the health and beauty centre. There are also interesting exhibitions organised by sociologists from Adam Mickiewicz University, for example about people with a mania for something strange like fixed gear bicycles, fashion blogging or tuning their computer casings. On warmer days you can lounge in front of the SPOT in a deckchair and drink elderberry juice.
