Smarzowski's “Wołyń” is outstanding
Veit Stoß began work on the main altar of the Church of St. Mary in late May 1477. He came to Krakow from Nuremberg to work on would become his magnum opis, one of the most magnificent achievements of European art in the late Middle Ages. The altar had a turbulent history. It was restored a couple of times. A team headed led by Dr Jarosław Adamowicz has worked since 2015 on restoring its former glory.
He was a source of inspiration for the rock group Tool and a mentor to Leonardo DiCaprio. It is 30 years since the passing of the outstanding Polish sculptor and art theorist Stanisław Szukalski. His biographer, Prof. Lechosław Lameński from the Catholic University of Lublin, told Poland.pl why “Stach from Warta” has once again become fashionable in Poland and the United States.
One hundred and fifty works by Katarzyna Kobro and Władysław Strzemiński will be shown at an exhibition opening on April 25th at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. It will include sculptures, spatial compositions, drawings, paintings, and functional projects by the eminent avant-garde couple, whose oeuvre spans the 1920s and 1930s up to the post-World War period.
Her works are displayed in over 70 museums and public collections all over the world. She made her mark on art history with her unique style in sculpture. Magdalena Abakanowicz died yesterday at the age of 87.
A monumental sculpture by late Polish artist Igor Mitoraj, entitled "Daedalus", will remain in Pompeii permanently as a gift to Italy, the country’s culture minister has said.
