Pope canonizes Polish priest

President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda visited Vatican on Sunday for the canonization of Polish priest Stanisław Papczyński.

The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Polish Episcopate.

The 17th-century clergyman will be made a saint alongside Swedish Bridgettine Sister Maria Elisabeth Hesselblad.

A theologian and thinker, Father Stanisław Papczyński was the founder of the Congregation of Marian Fathers. He was beatified in 2007.

The presidential couple arrived in Italy on Friday. On their visit, the Dudas saw an open-air exhibition of works by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj in Pompeii, recently unveiled amid the historic ruins.

The head of state also laid flowers at a plaque commemorating Polish writer Gustaw Herling-Grudziński and went to a display at Palazzo Filomarino dedicated to author. The couple also met with the late artist's daughter, Marta Herling.
