Polish poplar in race for European Tree of the Year title
A 220-year-old Polish poplar is in the race for the title of the European Tree of the Year.
The black poplar, nicknamed Helena, grows on Poland’s Baltic coast in the resort of Hel, towering majestically along a path leading to the headland.
The tree has witnessed many historic events, including Poland’s heroic defence of the Hel Peninsula against invading German troops in the early days of World War II.
Trees from 12 other countries have also been entered for an online vote (at www.treeoftheyear.org) that runs until the end of the month.
The results of the contest will be announced at a ceremony in Brussels on March 21.
