Hollywood star visits Bydgoszcz
Jessica Lange, best-known for her roles in King Kong, Tootsie, Blue Sky and The Postman Always Rings Twice, came to Bydgoszcz to receive the highly acclaimed Krzysztof Kieślowski Award.
Lange, an amateur photographer, used this opportunity to show her exhibition Unseen/Nieuchwytne, which opened during the Camerimage 2016 festival. The event, organized under the honorary patronage of President Andrzej Duda, will run until Saturday, 19 November.
This is the 24th time that Bydgoszcz is hosting the International Film Festival of The Art of Cinematography Camerimage 2016. The American actress Jessica Lange was awarded with the special Krzysztof Kieślowski Award during the Opening Gala on Saturday, during which the jazz pianist Wlodek Pawlik also performed an hour-long recital.)
The two-time Oscar winner and five-time Golden Globe winner, who became famous for her outstanding roles in Blue Sky and A Streetcar Named Desire, also used her visit to Bydgoszcz to present her photographic work. The exhibition Unseen/Nieuchwytne, accompanying the Camerimage 2016 festival, was inaugurated in the Bydgoszcz Municipal Art Gallery yesterday.
Marek Żydowicz, the festival’s director, also awarded a prize to the Canadian producer Robert Lantos for his “unique visual sensibility.” During the gala, five additional prizes were awarded – including a lifetime achievement prize that went to Michael Apted, the creator of the award-winning TV series Rome.
The festival was also an occasion to reminisce about the recently deceased filmmaker Andrzej Wajda, a great loss for the world of film. Andrzej Wajda Powidoki (Afterimage) which is Poland’s candidate for the Oscar was premiered during the festival.
The festival will screen 300 films and hold 10 competitions in different categories: the main category is for cinematographers, while others are for student etudes, Polish films, documentary features and documentary shorts, music videos, cinematographers’ and directors’ debuts, TV pilots (first episodes) and advertising spots for European funds.

Wyspiański is back in town
Stanisław Wyspiański – one of the most versatile Polish artists – associated his professional and private life with Krakow. Under Austro-Hungarian rule at the time, the city inspired him with its rich past and symbolism, but also with the challenges it faced. This led him to create his own vision of the capital of Galicia which he in part managed to portray. In his honour, the National Museum in Krakow is presenting the largest ever exhibition of his works, encapsulating this extraordinary relationship between his genius and the city he called his own.
