Car driving
In Poland, the traffic flows on the right side of the road. Expressways and motorways in Poland, amount to almost 3,000 km of roads, the sixth highest amount in the EU.
The following speed limits apply on Polish roads:
- Built-up area – 50 km/h (from 5 am to 11 pm), up to 60 km/h (11 pm – 5 am)
- Outside of built-up area – 90 km/h
- Living area – 20 km/h
- Dual expressroads – 110 km/h
- Single expressroads – 100 km/h
- Dual carriageways with at least two lanes in each direction – 100 km/h
- Motorways - 130 km/h
Seatbelts are obligatory for the driver and passengers at the front and back seats.
Children up to the age of 12 have to travel in a specially approved child safety seat.
TDipped-beam headlamps have to be switched on throughout the year.
While on the road, the driver can only talk on the mobile phone via a hands-free set.
The admissible blood alcohol content of the driver is 0.02 percent. Exceeding it is a felony punishable by up to 2 years' imprisonment.
The driver should have the following documents at hand:
- ID with a valid photo
- Non-EU drivers ought to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a valid driving licence issued by their home country
- Car registration card or log book with an entry about valid vehicle inspection
- Third liability insurance
- Green Card (applies to drivers from outside the European Union).
All vehicles have to carry a fire extinguisher and a warning triangle. Moreover, they should be equipped with a first-aid kit and a high-visibility vest.

Motorway tolls are charged. On the website of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways drivers can plan the route, check weather conditions and learn about the roadworks that disrupt the traffic.
Car rental
In major cities, it is possible to rent a car. Car rentals are usually located near airports. In order to rent a vehicle, you need to sign a relevant agreement and pay a deposit. When you return the vehicle, remember to sign a protocol of delivery confirming that you have returned the car free of faults.
